Chief Vann House
image sites
When I first saw this classic mansion it was a huge disappointment to me. That's because I was about 8 years old, and I was told we were going to see the home of an Indian Chief. I expected a tipi - not an elegant brick mansion with white columns.

I was at the Vann House most recently on the first week-end in March, 2005, and now in my 60's, I find the place utterly fascinating. It shatters the stereotypical image of American Indian life, and to visit it is both an eye opening and a moving experience.

Called the "Showplace of the Cherokee Nation," the Vann House is perhaps the best-preserved Cherokee plantation home. It was built by James Vann, the son of a Scottish trader and a Cherokee woman. Vann became an influential Cherokee and gained great wealth by placing various businesses along the Federal Road which forked through the Cherokee Nation in the early 1800s. Brick for the house was made of clay found on Vann's plantaion; lumber was cut from his own forest and sawed at his mills; nails were hand made from his blacksmith shops. The labor was provided by his more than 100 black slaves. At the time Vann moved into the mansion with his 2 wives and 9 children, March 24, 1805, he was one of the wealthiest men in America.

James Vann, who lived a rather violent life, was murdered in 1809, and his son, Joseph inherited the house. Joseph, called "Rich Joe," proved to be an even better businessman than his father. He became a leading and respected voice in the Cherokee Legislature.

Despite his wealth and influence, Vann was forced to leave his home and move to "Indian Territory" in present-day Oklahoma in 1832, during the inmamous "Trail of Tears," one of the darkest hours in American history.

You should look for peaches that are unblemished and not too firm. Fresh peaches spoil quickly so don’t buy too many unless you’re going to use them. Peaches don’t get sweeter after they are picked so make sure get the ripest ones you can.

There is nothing better than combining peaches with cake and whip cream. This cake as an awesome example of that. Adding the almond extract flavoring just gives these roasted peaches that extra zing that makes it delicious! This original recipe for this cake is dairy, so feel free to substitute the pareve [non-dairy] ingredients for the real thing.

by Sarah Lasry

www.aish.com/f/r/Passion_for_Peaches.html

My kitchen is full of luscious summer peaches. These juicy, succulent fruit are at their tastiest from mid-June to late August. However because peaches and nectarines have a very short shelf life on my counter, my passion for peaches merges with my love for cooking. Some of my best summer-time recipes include these delicious fuzzy fruit. Whereas I realize it is not the same as eating them raw, these tasty fruits are still quite delicious when cooked and added to some delicious ingredients like ice cream, pastries, fish, or salads. They make everything taste sweet and savory, just like summer.

12 peaches or nectarines, pitted and cut into 1/2 inch wedges
5 tblsp. orange or peach liquor
4 Tsp. lemon Juice
6 tbsp. + 1 tsp. granulated sugar
1 1/4 tsp. baking powder
3/4 tsp. salt
1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
2 large eggs
1 stick margarine, melted and cooled
1/4 tofutti sour cream
1/2 tsp. rum extract
1 tsp. almond extract
1/3 cup panko crumbs, crushed

Heat your oven to 425.

Step 1. Trow all your peach slices into a large mixing bowl. Add 4 tbsp. granulated sugar, orange liqour, and lemon juice. Toss well making sure to coat all the peach slices. Spread out all your peaches onto a baking sheet that has been lined with aluminum foil and sprayed with non stick spray . Bake in the oven for about 20-25 minutes.

While peaches are cooking:

Step 2: In a small mixing bowl add the flour, baking powder, salt and whisk them all together.

Step 3: In a separate small mixing bowl whisk together 1/3 cup granulated sugar and eggs until they have become thick (about 45 seconds) Slowly whisk in the margarine until combined.

Step 4: Add the sour cream and both extracts, whisk till combined.

Step 5: Add the flour mixture to the wet mixture and whisk everything together until combined

Step 6: Transfer half the batter into a greased 9 inch spring form pan. Then take 3/4 of your cooked and cooled peaches and press them into the batter.

Step 7: Sprinkle the panko crumbs generously over the peaches.

Step 8: Pour the rest of the batter over the top of the peaches and spread batter to cover the peaches as best as possible with a spatula.

Step 9: Bake in a 350 degree oven for about 40 minutes (rotating at least once) – Do the toothpick test to see if middle is cooked before removing.

Step 10 – let cake cool on counter for at least 30 minutes before running a knife around the edge and removing from spring form pan.

Serve with generous amounts of whip cream or ice cream and top with the remainder cooked peaches.

TIP: if you do not have panko crumbs feel free to use regular no spice bread crumbs
For the original recipe that was put out by cooks illustrated – all you would have to do is double the batter ingredients. Layer half the peaches on the bottom, cover with batter, and then layer again with peaches – sprinkle with breadcrumbs and a little more sugar and bake. – Also use real sourcream and butter.

-----..item 1b.. Roasted Peaches with Nutty Ice cream and Peach Sauce
............................................

imge code photo....Peach Roast

media.aish.com/images/peach-roast.jpg

............................................

I am addicted to broiled/roasted peaches. I make a batch of them every Friday morning and I treat myself to them throughout Shabbos. I eat them as a snack plain out of the Tupperware, or throw them in yogurt and salads, or just serve them up for a simple dessert with a dash of whip cream . But when I have company I love to serve them this really easy delicious summer dessert that’s always is a big hit.

4 ripe Peaches, sliced into 1inch thick sections
1 tbsp. raw sugar
Favorite Vanilla Ice Cream
½ cup crushed walnuts or pecans
1 tbsp. lemon juice

Put your oven on high broil

Lay your peach slices onto a sprayed cookie sheet. Sprinkle peaches generously with the raw sugar. Put in oven and roast for about 2-3 minutes until sugar has caramelized . Watch the peaches carefully as not to burn them. Remove from oven and set aside. When cooled store half in airtight container and reserve other half for peach sauce.

Precut 5 squares of plastic wrap and lay them on your counter for easy access. Put your crushed nuts onto a paper plate. Put on gloves and working quickly scoop out balls of vanilla ice cream. Roll ice cream ball into the nuts generously coating with nuts. Place onto one square of pre-cut plastic and wrap ice cream ball tightly . Place in between palm of your hands and gently smoosh and flatten your ice cream ball into a round hockey puck shape. Place back into freezer immediately. Repeat and continue to desired amount of ice cream servings are made.

Take half of your roasted peaches and place in food processor. Add the lemon juice and if desired another tsp. of sugar for extra sweetness. Pulse until peaches are totally smoothed into a sauce like consistency. Remove and store in airtight container.

To serve: Unwrap nutty ice cream and lay on plate. Top with sliced roasted peaches and add peach sauce generously and serve immediately.

Tip: Roasted Peaches last up to 2 weeks in airtight container in fridge . The sliced peaches can be frozen but when defrosted they will be a lot mushier because of water content. The peach sauce freezes beautifully.

-----..item 1c.. Grilled Tilapia with Peach and Nectarine Chutney
...................................................

img code photo....Peach Fish

media.aish.com/images/peach-fish.jpg

...................................................

Believe it or not Fish and Fruit is a great fresh tasting summertime meal combination. I often see a lot of fish recipes with fruit relish toppings which are all cold and not cooked. Because of my allergies I had to tweak these recipes and create chutney to top my simple fish with. This recipe works best on white fishes like tilapia and sea bass and have even used it as a topping for plain grilled chicken.

4 pieces of Fresh Tilapia Fillets
1 tsp. extra virgin olive oil
Kosher Salt & Fresh ground black pepper
For Chutney:
1 small red onion, sliced thin
2 tsp. olive oil
1 garlic, minced
2 peaches, diced into cubes
2 nectarines diced into cubes
¼ cup orange juice
¼ cup sweet white wine (like a moscato)

Fresh salt and pepper to taste

Lemon wedges as garnish

In a frying pan on med-high heat your olive oil. Sprinkle both sides of your tilapia generously with salt and pepper. Add the fish one piece at a time into the hot olive oil and cook your fish about 3-4 minutes on each side. Or until fish is cooked. Remove to platter and set aside.

In the same frying pan , add the olive oil for the chutney and heat on med high. Using a wooden spoon scrape up any cooked bits that are on the bottom of the pan and mix into the oil. Add the sliced onions and sauté for 4-5 minutes until onions have cooked. Add the garlic mix with onions and sauté for another 30 seconds and then add the diced peaches and nectarines. Mix and sauté everything for about 4 minutes then add the orange juice and white wine. Let the mixture cook down until the juices have mostly evaporated and thickened with the fruit, about another 4-5 minutes.

Remove from flame and season with salt and pepper to taste. Serve on top of freshly grilled tilapia.

Peaches & Cream
By Eileen Goltz | Jun 27th, 2012

Please note: Eileen Goltz is a freelance kosher food writer. The Orthodox Union makes no endorsements or representations regarding kashrut certification of various products/vendors referred to in her articles, blog or web site.

Fresh peaches are starting to appear in the produce sections and I thought having a guide to help you pick out the very best of the best will set you on the road to delicious.

Peaches have been grown in the United States since the Spaniards brought them to North America in their early explorations. They’ve played an integral part in making the fruit industry in Georgia, South Carolina and California as successful as has been (just check out the names of a lot of Atlanta streets to see what type of influence the peach has).

You should look for peaches that are unblemished and not too firm. Fresh peaches spoil quickly so don’t buy too many unless you’re going to use them. Peaches don’t get sweeter after they are picked so make sure get the ripest ones you can. If you need to peel your peaches (and you don’t have to, there’s bunches of good-for-you stuff in the skin), you should first blanch them in boiling water for about 1 minute and then drop them into ice water immediately to cool. The skin should come off easily. Just know that peaches will turn brown very quickly after they are cut so you should sprinkle them with lemon or lime juice if you aren’t going to use them immediately.

The phrase “peaches and cream” can literally mean eating “peaches” and “cream” together in a dish or pie or cake or whatever way your imagination (or taste buds) desire. The following recipes all combine peaches and some kind of cheese or cream (sometimes pareve) and every single one of them is going to make you say you’all come back and try it again real soon!

Hampton Court Palace is a former royal palace in the London Borough of Richmond upon Thames, south west London, England. The palace is located 11.7 miles (18.8 km) south west of Charing Cross and upstream of Central London on the River Thames. It is open to the public as a major tourist attraction. The palace's Home Park is the site of the annual Hampton Court Palace Festival and Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. Along with St. James's Palace, it is one of only two surviving palaces out of the many built by Henry VIII.

Flickr Hack #1

thomashawk.com/2007/01/top-10-hacks-on-flickr.html

1. The number one hack for Flickr would have to be Flickrleech. Flickrleech is a site developed by Andrew Houser (who is also a kick ass photographer), or simply Houser as he is often called, with the tagline, "because paging sucks."

When Houser released Flickrleech originally it would allow you to pull up any Flickr user's photos as a full page of thumbnails with no pagination. Although very cool, loading up 7,000 thumbnails wasn't exactly the nicest things to do to Flickr's servers and Houser actually changed his site to load 500 thumbnails at a time and today it sits at 200 thumbnails at a time.

Still, having the ability to browse a flickr user's photos at 200 thumbnails at a time is remarkable and allows you more photos on a single page than anything Flickr offers up themselves.

I'm constantly using Flickrleech to check out a new photographer's photos or to rapid fire go through someone's stream.

If you like these Flickr hacks feel free to digg them here.

Sunset sky I took at the end of a workday. These trees are in the parking lot behind my office, and I thought the coloration of sky and clouds was warm and comforting. I used the Irfanview plug-ins to color swap this one to come up with the hot pink sky and turquoise green sunset.

Pine Martin
[North American: Martes americana]
[European: Martes martes]

Pine martens are elusive nocturnal mammals which are found in pine forests and rocky scree areas. Suitable refuge sites include rocky crevices, disused squirrel nests (dreys) and holes in trees. Their fur is dark brown to black in colour with conspicuous creamy-orange throat patches. They have a pointed muzzle, prominent ears and a bushy tail. From head to tail adults are 64-81cm (25-32 inches) long . They weigh 1.3-1.7kg (2.8-3.7lb).

Feeding Pine martens are excellent climbers, and climb with agility in a squirrel-like manner from tree to tree as they search for food sources (such as birds, squirrels, rodents, rabbits, eggs, beetles, berries and even honey). They may also track down food on the ground where they are equally at home as in the trees.

Pine marten signs: Tracks and droppings indicate the presence of pine martens. Their foot prints are round and cat-like with five toes; claw prints are normally absent as they are only visible in soft ground. Droppings containing hair and feathers are deposited in regular latrines near to a boulder or log.

Hybrid Bus
image sites
Sarasota County Area Transit (SCAT) will introduce two more diesel-electric hybrid buses to its fleet on Jan. 25, bringing the total number of hybrid buses to three. Seven more hybrid buses will join the fleet in the next two months.

The SCAT offer of free rides on the first hybrid bus also ends Thursday. All hybrid buses are equipped with fare boxes.

The new bus is in the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) body style. This modern style has a curved front and rear with distinctive headlights. With its bright green-blue-gold-white design, the hybrid buses can be easily spotted as they rotate daily among the different SCAT routes.

The first hybrid joined the SCAT fleet on Aug. 7. When the 10th bus joins the fleet in March, it will make SCAT the owner of the largest fleet of BRT hybrid buses in Florida.

The new hybrid buses are part of Sarasota County’s commitment to reducing fossil fuel use through an initiative called the 2030 Challenge, which was adopted by the Board of County Commissioners on July 11.

The hybrids are more fuel-efficient than the standard diesel bus and will significantly reduce harmful emissions. The hybrid electric-diesel vehicle is 25-30 percent more fuel-efficient than the standard diesel bus, saving an estimated 7,000 gallons of diesel fuel per year. It also can reduce most emissions by more than 90 percent.

When the bus accelerates from a stop, the battery-powered electric motors assist the diesel engine for powerful acceleration. Once under way, the engine-driven generator charges the batteries. The vehicle’s regenerative braking captures energy normally lost as brake heat, and returns it the vehicle’s energy storage.

Allison-General Motors of Detroit, Mich., developed the transmission, and Gillig Corp. of Hayward, Calif. designed and built the bus.

The BRT hybrid bus costs 0,000. A standard diesel bus costs about 0,000. The hybrids are purchased with Federal Transit Administration grants.

The SCAT regular bus fare is 50 cents per ride; or 25 cents for seniors (age 65 and over) and persons with disabilities.

For more information about SCAT’s hybrid bus, contact the Sarasota County Call Center at 941-861-5000. For more information on current SCAT services and schedules, call SCAT at 941-861-1234 or visit the Web site, scat.scgov.net/SCAT.

The motto is in stark contrast to this week's revelations by NSA leaker Edward Snowden, who has now become the most infamous agency employee in recent years.

But a candid NSA archive reveals the thousands of staffers who been quietly working on America's most sensitive secrets for over six decades.

.....item 2).... Venona Decoding Soviet Espionage in America

... New York Times on the Web ... www.nytimes.com/books/ ...

By JOHN EARL HAYNES and HARVEY KLEHR
Yale University Press

www.nytimes.com/books/first/h/haynes-venona.html

VENONA AND THE COLD WAR

The Venona Project began because Carter Clarke did not trust Joseph Stalin. Colonel Clarke was chief of the U.S. Army's Special Branch, part of the War Department's Military Intelligence Division, and in 1943 its officers heard vague rumors of secret German-Soviet peace negotiations. With the vivid example of the August 1939 Nazi-Soviet Pact in mind, Clarke feared that a separate peace between Moscow and Berlin would allow Nazi Germany to concentrate its formidable war machine against the United States and Great Britain. Clarke thought he had a way to find out whether such negotiations were under way.

Clarke's Special Branch supervised the Signal Intelligence Service, the Army's elite group of code-breakers and the predecessor of the National Security Agency. In February 1943 Clarke ordered the service to establish a small program to examine ciphered Soviet diplomatic cablegrams. Since the beginning of World War II in 1939, the federal government had collected copies of international cables leaving and entering the United States. If the cipher used in the Soviet cables could be broken, Clarke believed, the private exchanges between Soviet diplomats in the United States and their superiors in Moscow would show whether Stalin was seriously pursuing a separate peace.

The coded Soviet cables, however, proved to be far more difficult to read than Clarke had expected. American code-breakers discovered that the Soviet Union was using a complex two-part ciphering system involving a "one-time pad" code that in theory was unbreakable. The Venona code-breakers, however, combined acute intellectual analysis with painstaking examination of thousands of coded telegraphic cables to spot a Soviet procedural error that opened the cipher to attack. But by the time they had rendered the first messages into readable text in 1946, the war was over and Clarke's initial goal was moot. Nor did the messages show evidence of a Soviet quest for a separate peace. What they did demonstrate, however, stunned American officials. Messages thought to be between Soviet diplomats at the Soviet consulate in New York and the People's Commissariat of Foreign Affairs in Moscow turned out to be cables between professional intelligence field officers and Gen. Pavel Fitin, head of the foreign intelligence directorate of the KGB in Moscow. Espionage, not diplomacy, was the subject of these cables. One of the first cables rendered into coherent text was a 1944 message from KGB officers in New York showing that the Soviet Union had infiltrated America's most secret enterprise, the atomic bomb project.

By 1948 the accumulating evidence from other decoded Venona cables showed that the Soviets had recruited spies in virtually every major American government agency of military or diplomatic importance. American authorities learned that since 1942 the United States had been the target of a Soviet espionage onslaught involving dozens of professional Soviet intelligence officers and hundreds of Americans, many of whom were members of the American Communist party (CPUSA). The deciphered cables of the Venona Project identify 349 citizens, immigrants, and permanent residents of the United States who had had a covert relationship with Soviet intelligence agencies (see appendix A). Further, American cryptanalysts in the Venona Project deciphered only a fraction of the Soviet intelligence traffic, so it was only logical to conclude that many additional agents were discussed in the thousands of unread messages. Some were identified from other sources, such as defectors' testimony and the confessions of Soviet spies (see appendix B).

The deciphered Venona messages also showed that a disturbing number of high-ranking U.S. government officials consciously maintained a clandestine relationship with Soviet intelligence agencies and had passed extraordinarily sensitive information to the Soviet Union that had seriously damaged American interests. Harry White--the second most powerful official in the U.S. Treasury Department, one of the most influential officials in the government, and part of the American delegation at the founding of the United Nations--had advised the KGB about how American diplomatic strategy could be frustrated. A trusted personal assistant to President Franklin Roosevelt, Lauchlin Currie, warned the KGB that the FBI had started an investigation of one of the Soviets' key American agents, Gregory Silvermaster. This warning allowed Silvermaster, who headed a highly productive espionage ring, to escape detection and continue spying. Maurice Halperin, the head of a research section of the Office of Strategic Services (OSS), then America's chief intelligence arm, turned over hundreds of pages of secret American diplomatic cables to the KGB. William Perl, a brilliant young government aeronautical scientist, provided the Soviets with the results of the highly secret tests and design experiments for American jet engines and jet aircraft. His betrayal assisted the Soviet Union in quickly overcoming the American technological lead in the development of jets. In the Korean War, U.S. military leaders expected the Air Force to dominate the skies, on the assumption that the Soviet aircraft used by North Korea and Communist China would be no match for American aircraft. They were shocked when Soviet MiG-15 jet fighters not only flew rings around U.S. propeller-driven aircraft but were conspicuously superior to the first generation of American jets as well. Only the hurried deployment of America's newest jet fighter, the F-86 Saber, allowed the United States to match the technological capabilities of the MiG-15. The Air Force prevailed, owing more to the skill of American pilots than to the design of American aircraft.

And then there were the atomic spies. From within the Manhattan Project two physicists, Klaus Fuchs and Theodore Hall, and one technician, David Greenglass, transmitted the complex formula for extracting bomb-grade uranium from ordinary uranium, the technical plans for production facilities, and the engineering principles for the "implosion" technique. The latter process made possible an atomic bomb using plutonium, a substance much easier to manufacture than bomb-grade uranium.

The betrayal of American atomic secrets to the Soviets allowed the Soviet Union to develop atomic weapons several years sooner and at a substantially lower cost than it otherwise would have. Joseph Stalin's knowledge that espionage assured the Soviet Union of quickly breaking the American atomic monopoly emboldened his diplomatic strategy in his early Cold War clashes with the United States. It is doubtful that Stalin, rarely a risk-taker, would have supplied the military wherewithal and authorized North Korea to invade South Korea in 1950 had the Soviet Union not exploded an atomic bomb in 1949. Otherwise Stalin might have feared that President Harry Truman would stanch any North Korean invasion by threatening to use atomic weapons. After all, as soon as the atomic bomb had been developed, Truman had not hesitated to use it twice to end the war with Japan. But in 1950, with Stalin in possession of the atomic bomb, Truman was deterred from using atomic weapons in Korea, even in the late summer when initially unprepared American forces were driven back into the tip of Korea and in danger of being pushed into the sea, and then again in the winter when Communist Chinese forces entered the war in massive numbers. The killing and maiming of hundreds of thousands of soldiers and civilians on both sides of the war in Korea might have been averted had the Soviets not been able to parry the American atomic threat.

Early Soviet possession of the atomic bomb had an important psychological consequence. When the Soviet Union exploded a nuclear device in 1949, ordinary Americans as well as the nation's leaders realized that a cruel despot, Joseph Stalin, had just gained the power to destroy cities at will. This perception colored the early Cold War with the hues of apocalypse. Though the Cold War never lost the potential of becoming a civilization-destroying conflict, Stalin's death in March 1953 noticeably relaxed Soviet-American tensions. With less successful espionage, the Soviet Union might not have developed the bomb until after Stalin's death, and the early Cold War might have proceeded on a far less frightening path.

Venona decryptions identified most of the Soviet spies uncovered by American counterintelligence between 1948 and the mid-1950s. The skill and perseverance of the Venona code-breakers led the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) and British counterintelligence (MI5) to the atomic spy Klaus Fuchs. Venona documents unmistakably identified Julius Rosenberg as the head of a Soviet spy ring and David Greenglass, his brother-in-law, as a Soviet source at the secret atomic bomb facility at Los Alamos, New Mexico. Leads from decrypted telegrams exposed the senior British diplomat Donald Maclean as a major spy in the British embassy in Washington and precipitated his flight to the Soviet Union, along with his fellow diplomat and spy Guy Burgess. The arrest and prosecution of such spies as Judith Coplon, Robert Soblen, and Jack Soble was possible because American intelligence was able to read Soviet reports about their activities. The charges by the former Soviet spy Elizabeth Bentley that several dozen mid-level government officials, mostly secret Communists, had assisted Soviet intelligence were corroborated in Venona documents and assured American authorities of her veracity.
