Several live Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells in vitro as viewed through a phase contrast microscope. Visible in the photo are nuclei, nucleoli mitochondria, and the cell boundary defined by the plasma membrane as well as other yet to be identified cellular structures.
For the next few weeks I will be working with these Chinese Hamster Ovary (CHO) cells in my Molecular Cell Biology course at MTSU. You are looking at an original picture of a group of these cells that we photographed using laboratory equipment (this is not a copy of an image from another source.) These are wild type CHO-K1 cells, the original cell line of which was started in 1957 by T.T. Puck. These cells grow in a monolayer on the bottom of the culture flask. CHO cells are commonly used in biological, genetics and medical research.
Using phase contrast microscopy allows the cells to be viewed live with out traditional staining which requires that the cells be fixed and results in quietus of the organism. Since the cells are living during observation, movement and activity of subcellular components can be easily viewed.

This serene image was captured by the official war photographer, John Warwick Brooke. The landscape looks very beautiful and there is a peaceful atmosphere conveyed in this scene. This could be because the soldier in the centre looks relaxed and at rest. Apart from the upturned gun, there are no other indications of this war zone present.
The Australian runner, Albert Edward Vinall, recalls 'Monty and I are sent back to look for No.5 and 6 Platoons, Fritz is shelling us with 5.9 and 8 inches. We found no sign of the Platoons but found plenty of Yanks who were lost.' Vinall's casual reference to shelling, highlights how complacent soldiers had become about the realities of war. The derogatory term for a German, 'Boche, originates from the French slang 'alboche, derived from two words 'allemand (German) and 'caboche (pate, head).

This image, the work of the war photographer John Warwick Brooke, admirably illustrates many of the war experiences which are recounted in today's society. Most action photographs, disseminated at the time for propaganda reasons, were deliberately staged, but this image lacks the cleanliness and order attributed to 'fake' situations.
Lance-Corporal Thomas Owen, recalls one of his shelling experiences, 'The shells were dropping practically on the very brink of the trench. Now the worst had come. We were face down in the slime, with boot and finger and knee clutching and scraping for the veriest inch of cover.'

Monitors are (3) matching 20" Dell 2001FP. They're older, but I'm not wild about "wide screen" monitors. This view is a 4800x1200 pixel desktop from my Dell XPS using DVI inputs into the monitor. I switch source by using the source buttons on the front of the monitors. The VGA source is for my Lenovo ThinkPad T60, and one of the S-Video inputs is for the hidden Dell C840 laptop that's mounted inside the floor box (for emergencies only).
Mission control console created by hollowing out a Pottery Barn wall shelf, flipping it upside-down, and setting it on top of the wire-hiding floor box. I routed out a slot in the front, and there are 2 4-port USB hubs, along with a smoke-tinted plexiglass cover that hides the Motorola DOCSYS 3 modem, Linksys 802.11n wireless router, Microsoft wireless keyboard base, and Raritan 4-port USB KVM switch (though I use it primarily for the K+M). The lights really showed up better with my older modem and router - they were all bright green LEDs blinking - looked great at night.
Creative Labs GigaWorks T40 Series II speakers are mounted to the sides of the monitor array.
Mouse is Logitech MX-something wireless laser.
Keyboard is Microsoft Wireless 3000 keyboard.
Mood lighting provided by an 18' strand of LED rope light
I Have Discovered The Physiological Source of All Happiness!

I've always wondered why I was so silly. Then yesterday, while looking through a copy of my 2009 brain MRI, I was shocked to find my inner smiley face staring right back at me!
This is a completely unretouched copy of what I saw (even though I really really wanted to tint the little smiley face's nose red).
So there you have it. The next time someone tells me to get serious and quit joking around, I'll just show them this picture, and explain that doing so would be a physical impossibility.
