Layar app for iPhone showing Wikipedia entries located nearby
free photo software
Layar is a free application on your mobile phone which shows what is around you by displaying real time digital information on top of reality through the camera of your mobile phone. The technology is called Augmented Reality. It uses the GPS, accelerometer and digital compass to know where you are and in which direction you are facing - it sources places of interest fro Wikipedia, Flickr, Yelp, etc. Really great potential but some of these sources still lack geolocation data for Cape Town and Flickr is only showing very recently taken photos.

More info at layar.com/. More interesting uses for this app shown at layar.com/blog/.

An unidentified demonstrator flashes a sign calling for "Free software, Open source" as he rushes across the stage following a speech by Microsoft Corporation Chairman Bill Gates at Beijing University, in China's capital city Friday April 20, 2007. Advocates of open-source tenet say that users should be allowed to view and edit the software's code.(AP Photo/Elizabeth Dalziel)

不想多评论什么,我也曾经是linux的用户,但是现在开源界,特别是中国的linux开源界,给我的印象就是浮躁,幸好开源还有BSD的高贵和典雅,才会有Mac OS的第二春。

I use Darktable to develop my RAW files, Darktable is free software (free as in speech not as in beer) which incorporates a lighttable to review you negatives or undeveloped RAW files and a darkroom for developing RAW files, hence the name, Darktable. I like it because the work-flow is simple and easy to follow as you don't get lost in lots of menus, you just work down a list of actions. All changes are non-destructive as well as plugin based so you can switch each on and off easily. Here is my original attempt. I think I much prefer this version which seems alot more natural and brighter too.

Here's what I did;
In Darktable
- Re-imported RAW file running the AMaZE algorithm on it to reduce CA
- Cropped
- set black and white points (stretched histogram making the whites whiter and blacks blacker)
- improved saturation
- sharpened
-correct white balance

In GIMP... I used burning to darken down the barn making it stand out a little more, resized for flickr and added a frame.

Challenge 82

1. Added tonal contrast using Nik Software.
2. Dropped in new sky to add some clouds.
3. Added mist over the river. Created a new layer and filled with grey. Then ran the render clouds filter. Next I distorted the clouds using Free Transform. I set the blend mode to soft light and used a black layer mask to hide the effect. Using a white brush i painted the mist back over the surface of the river.
4. Next I added a slight vignette. I did this by merging all layers to a new layer and changing the blend mode to multiply. I made a rectangular selection close to the edge and used refine selection to feather it. Deleted the selection leaving the vignette.
5. On a new layer I created the travel stamp. I used Free transform to re-size and rotate it. I distressed it using a layer mask and painted black with a textured brush.
6. Added a stroke around the picture. Increased the canvas size and added a drop shadow. The drop shadow was created on a new layer below the main photo. I filled it with black and blurred it. Next I warped it to create the arch shape and moved in down. Reduced the opacity of the shadow to 50%.

See the "Use Photoshop for Free" video

go.tagjag.com/screencast - twitter.com/chrispirillo - Sometimes, people want to make use of features of Photoshop, but they don't have the need (or resources) to buy the complete program. Adobe allows you to sign in on the website (or join for free) and use certain elements of PS without having to buy the actual software. There are options to create projects, edit photos and even email them to others when you're finished. In this screencast, Alex is going to show you where to go, and what to do when you get there! chris.pirillo.com - www.youtube.com/itsthemacaddictThis video was originally shared on blip.tv by l0ckergn0me with a No license (All rights reserved) license.

As things stand, if you want to use social software tools to support teaching and learning, RSS is an indispensable management tool. It also allows the blog to serve as container (and content generator) for disparate tools.

Key questions:
* What strategies for tapping RSS are most likely to prove effective for managing 'small pieces' instruction?
* What are the limitations and downsides of RSS?
* RSS can be a difficult concept to grasp for new users, and it can be difficult to find feeds of sufficient quality?
* How do we avoid simply jacking up the thresholds of information overload?

Linkage:
* An Introduction to RSS for Educational Designers-- Stephen Downes was way ahead of the curve in 2002
* RSS Quick Start Guide for Educators (Will Richardson, Weblogg-ed)
* 50+ RSS Ideas for Educators (Teaching Hacks)
* Notebooks of Leanardo Da Vinci via RSS
