Took this simple photo at an apple orchard, and then proceeded to make 18 different versions of it while trying to maintain the simplicity. Most of them, including the original shot, would have been fine and some of them might bave been better, but I kind of liked this one. I could have made 18 more but its time to move on.

An exhilarating rollercoaster ride through the animated pictures of Sarah's world, as she gets revenge on the man who broke her heart!

Written, Directed & Edited by Robin King
Starring Denise Hoey, David Crow, Ruth Larkin

This pixilation (stop-motion animation using real people) was made in 2006 for Screen South as part of the UK Film Council's Digital Shorts scheme. As much as possible, it was made 'in camera' without digital superimposure, using thousands of printed materials.

In answer to some of the questions below and others I've been frequently asked:

The whole film took about a year: roughly three months each for development, prep, shoot and post - although due to the nature of the film, part of the post bled into the shoot.

The programs I used were Photoshop, Premiere 6.5 and some bespoke programs I coded myself (a 3D animatic planning program and another to smooth out some of the tracking shots). To be honest my machine and the software weren't up to what I needed from them, and I would have a much better time of it now, with my macbookpro, FCP and a tablet...

I used a Canon Eos 350D Digital SLR to shoot, and took roughly 26,000 photos overall.

This is a frame from a video. You can watch it on Vimeo.

This is a birthday present I got. I like it more than I expected: while it's low quality, from where I sit I don't notice the quality, and it is neat for cycling through all my pictures.

"The Chinese Nail Salons Are Open..."

... as brankingston12 reminded me about two months ago.

This is a framegrab from the same Sony DCR-TRV130, captured at proper widescreen aspect ratio, just downsized a bit. (Captured it in Pinnacle Studio 12, because it doesn't squeeze the image like XP's video capture does.)

Anyway... Why my sudden obsession with my nails the last few months?

Call it jealousy... call it an experiment of sorts (since the last photo was labeled such)... call it just seeing if I could do it, and how long I can get away with it before I'm forced to trim them.

Actually, I think they're a good length as they are now. I can still type fairly decent, and fast, with them at this length. (A slight impact on speed and accuracy, but nothing I can't manage.)

How did I achieve this? Perserverance.
Up until about September 2009, I had been an avid nail-biter for most of my life. It was so bad that my cuticles were a wreck, with rampant hangnails and such. Somehow, I managed to discipline myself enough to stop biting them. (Hopefully for good!)

The other secret? Care for them. I'm a self-taught "Black Jack-of-all-trades", so I stocked up on the basics - Emery boards, salon boards, clippers, 6-way buffers, orange sticks, etc.

Here's a true story from about two hours ago (About 1800 PDT when it happened, posted this at 2011 PDT) when I picked up my car from one of the local tire and brake shops. One of the guys at the sales counter noticed, and remarked "Those are some shiny nails." - I simply acknowledged it, but didn't comment further. ^_^;

(And for the curious - Yes, I used clear nail polish. Sally Hansen Maximum Growth Plus "02 Base + Top Coat" - Laugh if you must, but it does work for adding strength and a bit of shine. I can put up with the "plastic coating" feeling, but at least they're not as brittle as they would be usually.) - Clear coat only - no colors were added.

Other than that, I just file them and shape them every week or so. I'll probably take them down about 2-3 mm and semi-square the edges a bit.

"And now you know.... The REST of the story!"

This morning I heard a whine from my photo corner.
I went to the noises and found that it was my digital camera, which felt largely neglected (Cause of the last days). A few colors sat beside her and wept with her.

The Last Digital Photo

That black strip on the bottom is the mirror forced to stay partly in frame because the focus screen sort of fell out. Made crunching sounds. Two nights prior I decided to attempt biking home while rather (and very surprisingly) drunk. I blacked out a few times, falling off my bike. Piecing forgotten memories together I gather that I walked home after about two blocks of unbalance. Camera most likely rattling in my bag by that point.

Last photo my DSLR took. Haven't touched digital since then.

I suppose this is rather fitting and on theme with my life. Film has taken a surprisingly larger role, I don't know why. I always thought I'd stick to digital and that would be that, no worries about physical mediums and mess.

With film I've slowed down, taking a photo a day is a rarities, let alone a few dozen to hundreds of pictures a day which is where I was at with digital. Taking my time to get shots that excite me with quality, instead of fire hosing my memory card in the hopes that whatever gamble I took, one of the images will turn out almost where I wanted it to be. It's time to perfect what I was doing with the current style of photography I was enjoying.

This slowing down, I felt, also reflected in my life. Slowing down to focus on the things that I cared about, that were close to my heart. Things that needed attention and caring, like myself, the people I loved, being creative and outgoing in what I built. Much in the same way someone says that they can now finally plop down and start a family, I felt I could now breath and look towards making things internal and external to me of a degree higher, giving more attention to entities that needed it. Cleaning ghosts out of my closet and mending those that are already there and present.

Over time I've become more obsessive with film. Bought a new (heavy) camera that I had no idea how to operate minutes before leaving for that silly place out there that's hot and dry. Acquired more and more odd film. Shot things I would never see again, shot a lot. Became annoyed with the level of quality scans provided by my favorite photo lab. Rolls and rolls of film, developed and not, waiting for me to find the time to not be so meticulous with other parts of my photography body, self. Some how slowing down for me was the exact opposite, I've shot less the second half of this year then I have before, yet here I am with a backlog of photos from forever ago and images I have only blinked at once waiting for me to rouse them up from beyond their emulsion.

Hand in hand my life became complicated with things. The thought of slowing down was a rather big joke. Allowing my job to slowly grip and pull my soul away from my personal self, a lust for money and a stable schedule. New and fresh projects came along, diverting my attention away from uncompleted ones (which still sit undone). Lovely new faces, and older ones, came into my life. I appreciated the comfort and company they provided while we exchange experiences.

Work, projects, new found love, all of these things came together, as they tend to within this community of crazy friends I have. All of these points of intensity slowly drew me away from someone I loved and once held close to me dearly. Drawing me away from the attention I told myself I would be giving to a relationship that needed it (always needed it). I lied to myself, saying things were fine and going well, fooling myself that another few days could pass and then I'd have time. The ones I loved, my friends, myself, all pushed away, ignored, and not bringing myself to be attentive to, all from lying to myself about slowing down on focuses with projects and work.

Time is such a funny metric. Free time exists in the future, but never in the now, never when it's needed. And don't me get started on the hopes and wishes of going into the past to mend things that should have never fallen to such depths. Undoable and unrecoverable.

And here I am, a broken camera in one hand, a shattered heart in the other. Both of my own doing.

Today there was a server issue that required me to go to the MSU Datacenter and do some on-site work. I'm glad that got resolved.

Anyway after the datacenter, a class, and then the datacenter again I went to my office for some downtime. When I got there I found it filled with prints of my photos. So yeah, Thanks mom for all the pictures :P
