Pake on a bicycle in Denmark
family photo
This is my Pake, or grandfather, Ed Brower, on his bicycle in 1953 in Denmark. He was stationed here for part of the Korean War. That's his army uniform; he's in front of a creamery.

I asked my mom, on her recent trip to my grandparents' house, to collect some old family photos that include bicycles. Planning on posting a few a day for the next couple of days.

Me and Mum

This is the picture we're using for the cover of the book, only in black and white. It captures the voice of the book and hints at the bi-racial perspective. The book is a lot about my mother's story coming to Thailand as a young wife. The book designers are lavishing lots of attention on the book. This wouldn't normally be so for a first time writer. My publisher is throwing lots of money into it because he's trying to ramp up his publishing company and this is the second book to be published by Blue Toffee. The publisher is also, incidentally married to my cousin, which just goes to show that it's true what they say about having connections. All the American agents I sent it to didn't feel it would have a big enough audience in the US. There is, however, lots of interest in interacial families in South East Asia where the book will be distributed (Singapore, Malaysia and Bangkok. What an interesting book tour that's going to be.)

Long Lost Family Photo: Our Dog "BB"

Long Lost Family Photo: Our Dog "BB"

You don't know how elated I was the other day when I came across the negatives of these three photos.

This was our dog, family, BB. One day in 1977 or 1978, my brother and I came home from school to find we had a new addition to the family. My uncle (on my mom's side) lived in rural Hong Kong and his bitch had given birth to some 10 pups.

He made the long track to downtown Kowloon and gave us one of the pups. When we got this dog, he was only a month old and we named him BB, an anglicized Chinese term for "baby."

We took these photos probably in the mid-1980s but we lost the printed photos as we moved to Canada. I've often missed the photos and wondered if I would ever see them again.

The other day, while going through some old boxes, I came across some neglected negatives and found the long lost photos.

Here is my on-line memorial for you, BB. Rest well. We all miss you.

With love.

Family volleyball[Day224]*

My family has this odd attachment with the game volleyball. Some people in my family say it is "just because mass groups can play". But I know it runs deeper than that. Ever since I can remember, volleyball has been ALWAYS played during the family reunion [even my Grandpa can remember playing at my age]. From the youngest then the oldest, everyone plays at least one game. Or they talk smack on the side line, aka in proper form, coaching.

Camera on tripod, remote in hand, snapped a half or dozen so, this one turned out the best. Cross processed.
Photo count for Sunday: 0652 total.
[Please notice; live vicariously in my photographs being I'll be uploading a TON, I just wanted to get these done first and for most.]

Just reposting one of my favorities =)

I took this photo at the top of a mountain on the island of Langkawi, Malaysia. I could not resist as they were wearing such wonderful bright clothing and they seemed so happy together. I have applied HDR treatment, and have also used Topaz to smooth out the photo.

flickr family

to say that my [our] flickr family is of great importance to me is something of an understatement.

doubtless the same statement could well be made by tens of thousands of other flickr account holders.

over the last year or so I have seen my own flickr family [both close and extended] grow.

grow in terms of the connections between one person and another into something beyond anything I had imagined possible when i began here on flickr.

to watch these these connections evolve has been, quite simply, astonishing.

evolution seems a fitting word to describe what has taken place.

from sharing photographs and art, comments and compliments, we have moved into a new evolutionary phase wherein it is not only photographs and comments we share, but flickr mail, parcels, gifts, video messages and voice messages.

and of course, the apex of any evolving flickr relationship, meeting a valued contact in the real world.

as many of you will know, I recently had the very great pleasure of meeting Jules:

www.flickr.com/photos/spaz-winchester/

when I step back and consider this recent meeting it leaves me aghast.

a year and a half ago I did not know Julian existed.

nor, without flickr, would I have been able to discover any evidence of Julian's existence.

these developing and evolving connections have, without doubt, been a most incredible thing to contemplate.

for hundreds of thousands of people [probably far more], flickr has become an integral part of their everyday lives.

like family.

many people may well maintain that their flickr contacts 'are' their family.

in an uncanny way, flickr reflects the behaviours of any family.

in the flickr family to which I happily belong, we have seen almost every situation that real world families encounter:

friendship.
love.
illness.
birth.
the coming together of people.
the breaking apart of people.
elation.
depression.
agreement.
disagreement.
understanding.
misunderstanding .
much laughter.
many tears.
despair.
courage.
hope.

i am intensely glad to be a small part of this communal journey.

who can foresee what incredible things may take place over the years to come.

i give my thanks, and offer my love, to all those in my [in our] flickr family.

this has been an amazing journey.

and of course...

it has only just begun.

thank you all.
