Chinatown gifts

Chinatown in San Francisco, CA is such an interesting place. I spent a good while there, wandering around, poking my head into shops and down random alleys. This shot was just something that caught my eye, so I thought I would share and hope everyone is having a great day!

Union Station, Kansas City
photo blog
Image by Jim Nix / Nomadic Pursuits
I spent the early part of this week in Kansas City, and after hours had some free time to shoot around the downtown area quite a bit. It's really nice. I hadn't been to KC in many years, and never with a camera. One of the first places I went off to explore was their Union Station, an updated and renovated train station downtown. It's fabulous. I love places like this. Since it was about 6pm, there weren't very many folks inside, which is good for me. I only had to wait for the occasional person that was wandering around to wander back out of my way. I spent a lot of time in and around Union Station, shooting architectural shots like this, as well as checking out some of the trains out back. It was awesome and I am looking forward to processing some more shots! I took about 400 shots in KC! In this shot, I really like the orange glow of the large clock in the distance.

This is a 7 exposure HDR taken at f/14, with exposures ranging from -4 to +2. They were merged in Photomatix to create the HDR file, and then I made some adjustments in PSE, Topaz Adjust, and Aperture. Topaz Adjust allowed me to bring out some of the details and textures that you see here. Enjoy! Look for more KC shots coming soon!
View it large if you have a minute!

Cherish the silence
photo blog
Image by Jim Nix / Nomadic Pursuits
I frequently find myself at this bridge when I am downtown in Austin with camera in hand. In this case, I had it to myself. It was my bridge, at least for some quiet moments. There is a silence that exists in busy towns, but you can only find it when you are up and moving about early on a weekend. I never seem to experience it at other times - it's elusive like that. I was happy to find it the morning I took this shot. Usually Lady Bird Lake is full of folks in boats of one sort or another, but not on this morning. It was weird, but I liked it.

Soldiers and Sailors
photo blog
Image by Jim Nix / Nomadic Pursuits
I took a trip to Indianapolis not too long ago, and was happy to return there for the first time in over a decade. It’s a nice town. I like it. There are a lot of interesting places to shoot there, like Monument Circle for example. It’s a huge circle in the center of town and in the middle of it sits this wondrous (and huge!) monument and fountain. From the web:

The Indiana Soldiers' and Sailors' Monument is a 284 ft 6 in tall neoclassical monument in the center of Indianapolis, Indiana that was designed by German architect Bruno Schmitz and completed in 1901. The monument was erected to honor Hoosiers who were veterans of the American Revolution, territorial conflicts that partially led up to the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the US Civil War, and the Spanish American War.

So, I took lots of shots from various spots, and could never get it all in one view, so I opted to piece it up and HDR it from a few different angles. I will drop those in sometimes and hope you enjoy them! Thanks for stopping by!

As things stand, if you want to use social software tools to support teaching and learning, RSS is an indispensable management tool. It also allows the blog to serve as container (and content generator) for disparate tools.

Key questions:
* What strategies for tapping RSS are most likely to prove effective for managing 'small pieces' instruction?
* What are the limitations and downsides of RSS?
* RSS can be a difficult concept to grasp for new users, and it can be difficult to find feeds of sufficient quality?
* How do we avoid simply jacking up the thresholds of information overload?

Testing the Promote
photo blog
I have the Promote remote for some time now and I have been testing it quite a lot. And i decided to try it on one of my favorite views in Bratislava, the view of the New Bridge. I did 7 shots here. I could use even more, as still there are few overexposed areas. But still, I'm very impressed with the amount of detail you can get when using more than 3 shots.

Soft blue colors on the Apollo bridge

I think I'm starting to be too critical of myself. I finished this photo already had it uploaded, when I notices a whiter area around the bridge. Probably because I added a little glow. First I tried to edit it out, but could not get the result I wanted, so I started once more. And with the second try, I'm satisfied :)

Also I'm very happy that I started to use a bubble level on my camera. I have the horizon nice and leveled, even if there are distortion in my photo. It really make it easier.

As I have stated several times on the blog here, I am a big fan of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco, CA. I have a lot of photos of this fine structure, and decided that I would take my current top three favorites and put them together into a single frame...so here you go!

Castle entrance
photo blog
Always when I tried to take a photo of this entrance, I had people in my shot. So in the end I decided to go there at 4:30 in the morning. What I didn't know is that the metro in Budapest does not run so early (better said, the line I needed) so I had a nice 30 minute walk at 4 in the morning through the city. The city looks really different at that time (and a little scary :) )
