american photo
The migratory American Goldfinch ranges from southern Canada to North Carolina during the breeding season, and from just south of the Canadian border to Mexico during the winter. Spring males are brilliant yellow and shiny black with a bit of white. Females and all winter birds are more dull, as here. This photo was taken at Potato Creek State Park in north central Indiana, about 12 miles southwest of South Bend.
