This is an obsession i have since ever: redesigning the way i wanted the covers of my favourite records. This series will be no more than that, my music revisited in just an aesthetic exercise combining images and typography.

Bristle Galaxy

A few nice edit image images I found:

Bristle Galaxy
edit image
Second of three images in a row, blue bristles of a very large round brush. This is not a macro, but a filled frame shot of a brush used for cleaning parking lots. I found great heavy equipment and machinery at Empire in Mesa, Arizona last August and took many shots in the early morning. Until I recently learned to edit images in the RAW format, I had previously been unsatisfied with my early experiments. Must be in a blue mood of sorts, three in a row on this subject.

Never Felt A Thing - Ottawa 05 07
edit image
I love the way the roadway looks curvy across the top of this image. That's my left arm and hand.
I must have pressed the shutter release while my right hand was in motion as I brought my hand up to shoot- on the fly. The standard shutter release speed on this must be slow . . . . riding my bicycle & moving the camera distorted the image as you see here.
This could be fun to try on purpose!

Evil Titan

Colorized image of Titan from Cassini images (UV3, MT2, MT3). This was the first pass for the final image (the previous image). The UV3 image was taken closer to Titan than the others, giving Titan a malicious red glow I kind of liked.

What's in my bag
my photos
Usually I try and reserve my flicker account for the better photos I take, but I make the occasional exception, and I always find it fascinating to see the contents of interesting people's bags, and thought it would be fun to do mine. And yes, I typically have 1 book of each type in my bag. If it's not too cold or wet I'll usually be reading one as I walk to and from work.

There are four notable items that don't usually live in my bag but travel with me constantly.

1) an Altoids tin filled with my Moo Cards that lives in my coat (actually 2 of them, one in each coat).
2) my phone (with which I took this pic)
3) Cash and cards, which live in my pocket. I don't own a wallet.
4) My keys, which live in the other pocket.

See where this picture was taken. [?]

Late for Bokeh Wednesday... I missed on the focus a little on this shot, but I still liked the abstract look it provides. These are the marbles on the doors in the queue of Rock 'N' Roller Coaster Starring Aerosmith.

Bokeh
Bokeh describes the rendition of out-of-focus points of light. Differing amounts of spherical aberration alter how lenses render out-of-focus points of light, and thus their bokeh. The word "bokeh" comes from the Japanese word "boke" (pronounced bo-keh) which literally means fuzziness or dizziness.

Airplanes Light Trails
photo lights
Today's proyect required lots of patience.
First I should say that I live near two airports (VNY/BUR) the nearest one is local and the second one with domestic flights, right outside my terrace I could hear when Airplanes are passing over my apartment, few months ago I was shooting car trails, the ones when you leave your shutter open for couple of seconds and you see the back/front lights of a car leaving a light trail, today I did the same concept but now using Airplanes instead of cars.

1) Setup my camera on a tripod using my Canon 40D with a 24-70 mm wide open I framed right on top of the building next to mine, I prefocused and leave it in manual focus, fired a couple of test shots until I was satisfied with the exposure, so the ideal setting was:

30 seconds at F/5.6, 100 iso and lots, lots of patience.

I started shooting at 6:17pm and the last shot was taken at 9:55pm ( There was not air traffic at that time, and since I had my window open I was freezing in my living room that's why I wrapped everything up few minutes before 10 pm)

Some of the light trails are from big and small planes, also a few choppers where flying around so I was paying attention to what was happening outside my window.

One thing I noticed is that the aiplanes heading to BUR (longest trails) they were flying at the same altitud, is like and invisible road, at one moment I saw 5 airplanes passing with a diference of minutes between each plane.

The white little spots are star trails.

2) at the end of the project I opened all 24 images in photoshop and place them one on top of the other in layers, then I started with the top layer and changing each layer to 'lighten' in the layers blend modes, then I merged all layers to get this final image.

I'm pretty happy with the result I migth go near BUR and spend the night shooting from a different perspective one of this nights.

last but not least... if you like it feel free to comment, share it and fav it!

Best!

A radio documentary made back in 1997. Produced by Steve Shepherd & presented by Charles Shaar Murray. I spent two weeks in San Francisco and New York interviewing Lenny's friends, lawyers and collaborators, then edited 25 hours of tape (and it was tape) down to around an hour of material and refined it with Charles (who delivered a great script as always). It was well received at the time but had a limited audience with just two airings on Radio 3. Enjoy. Steve Shepherd,

Anti-Coal Poster v0.1 #3
photo to poster
A rough draft of a poster I'm making for Typography III at KU. It is an activism poster protesting the building of a coal-fired power plant near Holcomb Kansas. The company building it will sell most of the generated electricity to Colorado.

I personally like the clean type on this one, as opposed to off kilter, distressed type on the previous two. There is that big blank area on the right, however....

The main issue that was brought up in critique today was that it wasn't clear what it is about without reading the paragraphs in white. This makes me think that a secondary headline might be useful, or maybe just a new headline. ("Not in our backyard!" is forceful, but it is also vague.)

[Edit] The project is over and this avenue was scrapped early on. This is the new image poster (the one that replaced this concept). This is its companion, which is primarily text based. I'm happy with the way both of them turned out, though I still wish I could have developed this idea further.

I hope they may bring back fond memories for you. Which one is your favorite?

Smoke Art - Whirlywind

A few nice photo art images I found:

Photographing smoke art is one of the most rewarding aspects of home photography. We've all seen the wispy strands that float and glide through the air, but it's not until these trails are frozen in time do we see the true beauty and elegance of their construction.

In many images it's possible to see a subject within the smoke.

The advantage of smoke art photography is that - compared to water droplets - the patterns take longer to form so it's easier to judge when to take the shot. It's when the scene is viewed on the screen that the true diversity and uniqueness of the patterns is realised.

This was processed in Photoshop to highlight the patterns that exist within the formations.
