I decided to edit THIS PIC as per MIchael SA's suggestion. I agree that it does look better without the power pole, power lines & tree behind the train. I also cropped it slightly to centre the van.

The run is part of the Thanksgiving celebration coordinated by the ships Moral, Recreation and Welfare program for the Marines and Sailors. The 24th MEU is deployed with the Iwo Jima ARG and is currently in the 6th Fleet area of responsibility. Since deploying in March, they have supported a variety of missions in the U.S. Central, Africa and European Commands, assisted the Navy in safeguarding sea lanes, and conducted various bilateral and unilateral training events in several countries in the Middle East and Africa.

Skype Estonia Panel

Fun with the Skype team and the President of Estonia today.

Just after my talk, we had a panel on the Skype phenomenon and E.stonia: "What is it about Estonia, with an obscure language and unenviable weather that produces more startups per head of population than any other country in Europe?"

I felt especially proud to hear the President speak of two-factor authentication as the underpinning of federated identity management, the key requirement for e-healthcare adoption. You don't often hear from a President that has been programming since the age of 13. (He connected via Skype video from his summer home in the countryside. When his dog barked, we all thought it came from the stage somehow and checked our phones).

Bradford City Hall (Creative Commons)

A few nice image upload images I found:

Bradford City Hall (Creative Commons)
image upload
I've been building a stock image portfolio for use in council reports, regional NHS documents and other such publications that require pictures to liven up their content or provide a sense of the locality.

Not all of the images can be published as they were funded and copyrighted by my employers, but there's usually a bunch of good material left over that doesn't get used.

Quality, high-resolution pictures of Bradford city centre seem to be quite a rarity on the web at present. As such, I'm now on a mission to shoot a bit more coverage of the city and upload it to the web for free! My Flickr statistics indicate that search engines direct up to a thousand visitors to this photostream each day, so hopefully some of the Bradford content will be Googled in due course.

Photos like this one are released under a Creative Commons BY-NC license, which means you can use it for any noncommercial purpose as long as you credit me somewhere in the smallprint.

To find out if the shot you like is a Creative Commons one, just look for the licensing information at the bottom of the right hand sidebar on its Flickr page. Occasionally my images are withdrawn from Creative Commons when an agency purchases their sales and licensing rights, but if you use the photo in a project *before* such a time then it's all above board.

Commercial clients can purchase a license anytime via Getty Images or negotiate a deal via my sales website. Thanks for your interest!

Day 246

Yesterdays shot, but couldn't upload it until now.

Omg so i think i'm in love with this photo.
All these shots that I've uploaded are from Love's (right) 14th birthday party sleep over.
Her sister Samantha is in the yellow plaid, and of course you all know my sister in the middle. Oh! So yeah, this is a pretty funny shot, because I had them walking backwards, yup. They are not walking towards me, They are walking away from me.

I love the light, and the way the pavement looks and the depth of field. And where everyone is standing.

Ok, enough photo rambling...
I had a blast at Love's bday celebration!! I didn't go to bed till 5am. Raven went to bed at 3:41, Love went to bed at 4:30 and Sam said she stayed up till 6am...

Watched 5th Element, Sang Kareoki till like 1 or 2am and then we watched Grease. And after I was like "lets play the wii!" but Love said that I should play with her DS instead, that way she could sleep. It was so much fun!!!

Probably my best sequence of images for the whole weekend. Caught this guy at 6 FPS launching off a jump, flying through the air, bottoming-out the suspension on landing, and extending the suspension on rebound. All of the shots here are basically uncropped (except for slight straightening).

These cars have approximately 24 inches of suspension travel... they use every bit of it.

I use Darktable to develop my RAW files, Darktable is free software (free as in speech not as in beer) which incorporates a lighttable to review you negatives or undeveloped RAW files and a darkroom for developing RAW files, hence the name, Darktable. I like it because the work-flow is simple and easy to follow as you don't get lost in lots of menus, you just work down a list of actions. All changes are non-destructive as well as plugin based so you can switch each on and off easily. Here is my original attempt. I think I much prefer this version which seems alot more natural and brighter too.

Here's what I did;
In Darktable
- Re-imported RAW file running the AMaZE algorithm on it to reduce CA
- Cropped
- set black and white points (stretched histogram making the whites whiter and blacks blacker)
- improved saturation
- sharpened
-correct white balance

In GIMP... I used burning to darken down the barn making it stand out a little more, resized for flickr and added a frame.

Challenge 82
free photo software
1. Added tonal contrast using Nik Software.
2. Dropped in new sky to add some clouds.
3. Added mist over the river. Created a new layer and filled with grey. Then ran the render clouds filter. Next I distorted the clouds using Free Transform. I set the blend mode to soft light and used a black layer mask to hide the effect. Using a white brush i painted the mist back over the surface of the river.
4. Next I added a slight vignette. I did this by merging all layers to a new layer and changing the blend mode to multiply. I made a rectangular selection close to the edge and used refine selection to feather it. Deleted the selection leaving the vignette.
5. On a new layer I created the travel stamp. I used Free transform to re-size and rotate it. I distressed it using a layer mask and painted black with a textured brush.
6. Added a stroke around the picture. Increased the canvas size and added a drop shadow. The drop shadow was created on a new layer below the main photo. I filled it with black and blurred it. Next I warped it to create the arch shape and moved in down. Reduced the opacity of the shadow to 50%.

Arizona - USA - Before Gran Canyon, flight view

The Grand Canyon is a steep-sided canyon carved by the Colorado River in the United States in the state of Arizona. It is largely contained within the Grand Canyon National Park, one of the first national parks in the United States. President Theodore Roosevelt was a major proponent of preservation of the Grand Canyon area, and visited it on numerous occasions to hunt and enjoy the scenery.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 km) long, up to 18 miles (29 km) wide and attains a depth of over a mile (1.83 km) (6000 feet).[1] Nearly two billion years of the Earth's geological history have been exposed as the Colorado River and its tributaries cut their channels through layer after layer of rock while the Colorado Plateau was uplifted.[2] While the specific geologic processes and timing that formed the Grand Canyon are the subject of debate by geologists,[3] recent evidence suggests the Colorado River established its course through the canyon at least 17 million years ago.[4][5] Since that time, the Colorado River continued to erode and form the canyon to the point we see it at today.[6]
Before European immigration, the area was inhabited by Native Americans who built settlements within the canyon and its many caves. The Pueblo people considered the Grand Canyon ("Ongtupqa" in Hopi language) a holy site and made pilgrimages to it.[7] The first European known to have viewed the Grand Canyon was García López de Cárdenas from Spain, who arrived in 1540.[8]

----
