2 of 2 Fill flash experiment on Les Christiansen

2 of 2 Les Christiansen - Fill flash used to lighten shadows of hat - 26 July 2008 Digital Photo Walk, Valencia Peak, Montana de Oro

This photo is one of a pair, of subject Les Christiansen (see the other photo), intended to demonstrate the use of "fill" flash to eliminate shadows. This experiment was part of the Sat., July 26, 2008 9:00 AM Digital Photo Walk (Valencia Peak). The camera used was an ultra compact Canon SD950IS with on-camera built-in flash, which does not have flash exposure compensation. The "fill flash" in this case was a full-power flash. Ideally, a lighter fill at -1 or -2 or even -3 might have produced a better image. In any case, using some flash is shown to be better than no flash, when photographing subjects in harsh bright sunlight that produced shadows from hat brims.

Turn an empty KFC bucket into the cheapest DIY ring flash ever
flash photo
Ring flashes make a really neat effect, because the light comes from all around the lens and not from above or beside it.

Check out the test pictures I took to see what effect it makes.

And you can check out the ring flash flickr group to see what ring flash photos are supposed to look like.

So, now you can recycle a KFC bucket and make your own ghetto ring flash. Yay.

It's finger-lickin' good!
