I've been having fun with retrievr, a program that lets you draw and then shows you the Flickr images that match graphically. Great way to find new photos, too!

Heart Sutra
heart image
I've been fiddling around with images, learning the new camera, and this image brought to mind the Heart Sutra. I found this stone, about the size of a human heart, on the Oregon shore soon after I moved here in 2008, and I love the contrast between the rough stone and the silky white drapery. What is more miraculous than the heart, which never stops beating, never takes a rest, never gives up...right to the very end. In an echocardiogram the heart looks as though it's powered by a small, indefatigable bird that beats and beats its wings for exactly the length of a lifetime.

One of my favorite translations of the Heart Sutra is the one Kazuaki Tanahashi and Joan Halifax created: home.comcast.net/~meditationsouthbend/Heart.pdf

The untranslatable part is this:
Gate, gate, paragate, parasamgate, bodhi svaha.

I love to say it, to hear it, to feel the echo of it in my bones and in my heart. Gate, gate, paragate.... When the heart stops beating, those words are what is left.
