The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012

The Black Family Tree Tapestry
To create this meticulous visualization of the Black family tree, graphic designer Miraphora Mina turned to author J.K. Rowling for details about how each Black family member appeared as well as creative input. The final design was so successful that the Art Department actually redesigned the Grimmauld Place set where it hung, moving the tapestry from the hallway into an entirely new room to showcase it. Whilst the piece appears to look like a tapestry, the family tree was actually hand-painted onto canvas fabric.

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
- Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.

Summer Fun, 1983
fun photos
When you are three or one years old, there's nothing more fun than the water sprinkler on a hot summer day. And you're young enough to go topless, too. A note on the back of the photo says the squeals of delight brought the neighbors out to see what was going on.

[Scan of old photo taken on a cheapie, point and shoot box of a camera. The photo quality is lacking, but the subject matter is fun and worth sharing.]

Shoplifting is fun
fun photos

We stopped off the Vauxhall Corsa (the hairdresser's choice, according to Ralph) at our local Essos and found that the forecourt and shop was filled with print outs from CCTV cameras of two shoplifters (in photo).

Presumably, this was to warn the criminals that their evil deed had been spotted.

But look how much fun they are having! The guy at the back is having a whale of a time. That's not evil, just all round good fun.

In fact, it made me want to start shoplifting my self. So I nabbed a couple of packet of Trebor Mints and a can of Fanta on the way out! Result!

* La foto que saqué yo en ese momento
* Todas las fotos de TEDx Buenos Aires

===================================

The booth of Brando's magazine was the best of all TEDx, imo. People would go, have their picture taken in that magazine-cover-like set and they would receive their photo printed minutes later. Was very original to me and held the TED spirit of creativity and interaction. This is why I mention it. It was thought up and developed by Virginia Zalabeite, art director of TCC | La Factoría www.factoria.com.ar .

The theme I used for my picture was "the photographer that shoots the photographer, quite "meta" as expected from me. As well, this is a photo of the printed photo. The photographer is Juan Gonzalez del Cerro.

Dungeness 21-04-2012

Some cool image shack images:

Dungeness 21-04-2012
image shack
Dungeness is a headland on the coast of Kent, England, formed largely of a shingle beach in the form of a cuspate foreland. It shelters a large area of low-lying land, Romney Marsh. Dungeness is also the name given to a “village” situated along the beach, and to an important ecological site on the same location. It is one of the largest expanses of shingle in the world. It is of international conservation importance for its geomorphology, plant and invertebrate communities and birdlife.

Dungeness is not truly a village, more a scattered collection of dwellings. Some of the homes, small wooden houses in the main, many built around old railway coaches, are owned and lived in by fishermen, whose boats lie on the beach; some are occupied by people trying to escape the pressured outside world. The shack-like properties have a high value on the property market.

Perhaps the most famous house is Prospect Cottage, formerly owned by the late artist and film director Derek Jarman. The cottage itself is painted black, with a poem, part of John Donne's “The Sunne Rising”, written on one side in black lettering. The garden however is the main attraction. Reflecting the bleak, windswept landscape of the peninsula, Derek Jarman's garden is made of pebbles, driftwood, scrap metal and a few hardy plants.

There is a remarkable and unique variety of wildlife living at Dungeness, with over 600 different types of plant (a third of all those found in Britain). It is one of the best places in Britain to find insects such as moths, bees and beetles, and spiders; many of these are very rare, some found nowhere else in Britain. The short-haired bumblebee, declared extinct in the UK nearly a decade ago, but which has survived in New Zealand after being shipped there more than 100 years ago, is to be reintroduced at Dungeness in the spring of 2010.

"Stephen Colbert (b. 1964, Washington, DC), the mock pundit for the Comedy Central show, “The Colbert Report”, recently contacted the National Portrait Gallery hoping to donate this triple portrait of himself from his show. While this portrait (digital image on canvas, 2005) is not one that would typically be accessioned into the Gallery’s permanent collection, the NPG agreed to go along with the joke and hang the portrait for a limited time."

"In episodes of The Colbert Report that aired on January 10, 14, and 15, 2008, Colbert tries to convince the Smithsonian that he should be considered a national treasure. He attempts to donate his portrait to the Smithsonian’s National Museum of American History, but the museum’s director suggests that perhaps Colbert should speak to the National Portrait Gallery. Finally, after much “discussion”, the director of the NPG finds an appropriate place to hang Colbert’s portrait--in between the bathrooms and above the water fountain." (Source: Plaque on the wall at left of the portrait) Explore #131

UPDATE--On April 1, 2008, the National Museum of American History agreed to display Stephen Colbert's portrait in the "Treasures of American History" exhibition until it closed on April 13, 2008. [This exhibition was located in the National Museum of Air & Space, while the American History museum building was being renovated.] Later that year, the portrait went on view in the newly renovated National Museum of American History, where it remained on view until September 2009. The portrait returned to view at the National Museum of American History on December 16, 2010 [near the 3rd floor bathroom by the exhibit called "Treasures of Popular Culture."
