.........................................................

WASHINGTON (AFP) – An unusual solar flare observed by a NASA space observatory on Tuesday could cause some disruptions to satellite communications and power on Earth over the next day or so, officials said.

The potent blast from the Sun unleashed a firestorm of radiation on a level not witnessed since 2006, and will likely lead to moderate geomagnetic storm activity by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.

"This one was rather dramatic," said Bill Murtagh, program coordinator at the NWS's Space Weather Prediction Center, describing the M-2 (medium-sized) solar flare that peaked at 1:41 am Eastern time in the United States, or 0541 GMT.

"We saw the initial flare occurring and it wasn't that big but then the eruption associated with it -- we got energy particle radiation flowing in and we got a big coronal mass injection," he said.
"You can see all the materials blasting up from the Sun so it is quite fantastic to look at."

NASA's solar dynamics observatory, which launched last year and provided the high-definition pictures and video of the event, described it as "visually spectacular," but noted that since the eruption was not pointed directly at Earth, the effects were expected to remain "fairly small."

"The large cloud of particles mushroomed up and fell back down looking as if it covered an area of almost half the solar surface," said a NASA statement.

Murtagh said space weather analysts were watching closely to see whether the event would cause any collision of magnetic fields between the Sun and Earth, some 93 million miles (150 million kilometers) apart.

"Part of our job here is to monitor and determine whether it is Earth-directed because essentially that material that is blasting out is gas with magnetic field combined," he told AFP.

"In a day or so from now we are expecting some of that material to impact us here on Earth and create a geomagnetic storm," he said.

"We don't expect it to be any kind of a real severe one but it could be kind of a moderate level storm."
The Space Weather Prediction Center said the event is "expected to cause G1 (minor) to G2 (moderate) levels of geomagnetic storm activity tomorrow, June 8, beginning around 1800 GMT."

Any geomagnetic storm activity will likely be over within 12-24 hours.

"The Solar Radiation Storm includes a significant contribution of high energy protons, the first such occurrence of an event of that type since December 2006," the NWS said.

As many as 12 satellites and spacecraft are monitoring the heliosphere, and one instrument in particular on board NASA's lunar reconnaissance orbiter is measuring radiation and its effects.

"Certainly over the (two-year) lifetime of the mission this is the most significant event," said Harlan Spence, principal investigator for the cosmic ray telescope for the effects of radiation, or CRaTER.
"This is really exciting because ironically when we were developing the mission initially we thought we would be launching closer to a solar maximum when these big solar particle events typically occur," Spence told AFP.

"Instead we launched into a historic solar minimum that took a long, long time to wake up," he said.
"This is interesting and significant because it shows the Sun is returning to its more typical active state."
The resulting geomagnetic storm could cause some disruption in power grids, satellites that operate global positioning systems and other devices, and may lead to some rerouting of flights over the polar regions, Murtagh said.

"Generally it is not going to cause any big problems, it will just have to be managed," he said.
"If you fly from the United States to Asia, flying over the North Pole, there are well over a dozen flights every day," he added.

"During these big radiation storms some of these airlines will reroute the flights away from the polar regions for safety reasons to make sure they can maintain communications.
"People operating satellites would keep an eye on this, too, because geomagnetic storming can interfere with satellites in various ways whether it is the satellite itself or the signal coming down from the receiver."

The aurora borealis (Northern Lights) and aurora australis (Southern Lights) will also likely be visible in the late hours of June 8 or 9, NASA said.

By DAILY MAIL REPORTER

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-2091433/Delta-reroutes-f...

A rare explosion in space on Sunday that has caused a solar radiation storm has led to Delta Air Lines Inc. rerouting some of its flights.

Delta, which is based in Atlanta, Georgia, announced on Tuesday that flights that go over the North Pole, which is the part of Earth most vulnerable to the storm, are flying on a more southerly route.

The flights affected depart from Hong Kong, Shanghai and Seoul and arrive at Detroit. Cellphones can also be affected with reports of dropped calls and GPS units not working for no apparent reason.

Taking no risks: Delta is rerouting flights that go over the North Pole to avoid the impact of the solar storm

..............................................
.
.

The airline added that the flights are going faster to keep the schedule on track, the Wall Street Journal reports.

The rerouting is a precautionary measure because of concerns that radiation levels are greater near the North Pole because of the thin ozone layer there.

The storm could also interrupt communications between satellites and Earth.

Fiery fury: A Nasa image from Sunday night of the explosion on the sun

................................................
.

A massive explosion on the sun on Sunday caused an eruption of particles that hit the Earth early Tuesday.

According to the Space Weather Prediction Center of the U.S. National Weather Service, it's the biggest solar storm since October 2003.

The chief concern is the radiation, says the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center in Colorado.

Blast of heat: Sunday night's flare caused an eruption of particles that hit the Earth early Tuesday

Space physicist Doug Biesecker said the radiation messes with the satellites causing communication problems for polar-travelling airplanes.

Radiation from Sunday's explosion hit Earth an hour later and looks likely continue throughout Wednesday, he added.

On fire: A startling image of the sun taken from Nasa's Solar Dynamics Observatory

................................................
.

NOAA has classified the radiation level as strong, the strongest since May 2005. There are two higher levels: severe and extreme.

Going over the North Pole is the most direct route for most U.S.-north east Asia flights.

GPS systems could be affected because the earth's electromagnetic field gets disturbed by radiation coming off the sun, and GPS signals have to pass through that disturbed area.

Speaking about the affect on cellphones, Mr Biesecker said: 'It can be impacted if it's sunrise or sunset and the cell tower is in the same direction of the sun.

'A cellphone signal is very very weak, so anything that comes in at that frequency could overwhelm it.

You would just drop the call, but you wouldn't realize why.'

Who is Joseph Kony?

Joseph Kony is the world’s worst war criminal. In 1987 he took over leadership of an existing rebel group and renamed it the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA).

The LRA has earned a reputation for its cruel and brutal tactics. When Joseph Kony found himself running out of fighters, he started abducting children to be soldiers in his army or “wives” for his officers. The LRA is encouraged to rape, mutilate, and kill civilians–often with blunt weapons.

The LRA is no longer active in northern Uganda (where it originated) but it continues its campaign of violence in Democratic Republic of Congo, Central African Republic, and South Sudan. In its 26-year history, the LRA has abducted more than 30,000 children and displaced at least 2.1 million people.

What is the goal of KONY 2012?

Invisible Children has been working for 9 years to end Africa’s longest-running armed conflict. U.S. military advisers are currently deployed in Central Africa on a “time-limited” mission to stop Kony and disarm the LRA. If Kony isn’t captured this year, the window will be gone.

We are taking action to ensure these two things:

1) That Joseph Kony is known as the World’s Worst War Criminal.

2) That the U.S. military advisers support the Ugandan Army until Kony has been captured and the LRA has been completely disarmed. They need to follow through all the way and finish what they have started.

Why are we making Joseph Kony “famous”?

Invisible Children’s KONY 2012 campaign aims to make Joseph Kony famous, not to celebrate him, but to raise support for his arrest and set a precedent for international justice. In this case, notoriety translates to public support. If people know about the crimes that Kony has been committing for 26 years, they will unite to stop him.

Secondly, we want Kony to be famous so that when he is stopped, he will be a visible, concrete example of international justice. Then other war criminals will know that their mass atrocities will not go unnoticed or unpunished.

WORLD PEACE!

Austin-Healey was a British sports car make. The marque was established through a joint-venture arrangement, set up in 1952 between Leonard Lord of the Austin division of the British Motor Corporation (BMC) and the Donald Healey Motor Company, a renowned automotive engineering and design firm.

Austin-Healey cars were produced until 1972 when the 20-year agreement between Healey and Austin came to an end. Donald Healey left the company in 1968 when British Motor Holdings (BMC had merged with Jaguar Cars in 1966 to form BMH) was merged into British Leyland. Healey joined Jensen Motors who had been making bodies for the "big Healeys" since their inception in 1952, and became their chairman in 1972.

Moral courage is a rarer commodity than bravery in battle or great intelligence. Yet it is the one essential, vital quality for those who seek to change a world that yields most painfully to change. Each time a person stands up for an idea, or acts to improve the lot of others, or strikes out against injustice, (s)he sends forth a tiny ripple of hope, and crossing each other from a million different centers of energy and daring, those ripples build a current that can sweep down the mightiest walls of oppression and resistance.”

High Pass Filter &
Happy Blurry Shit In The Background Wednesday

Recently a few people have asked how I've been doing my eyes in my photos. One of the things I discovered awhile back when we did "Technique" in TOTW is the High Pass Filter in Photoshop. I'm not sure what the equivalent is in other programs, like maybe GIMP, but basically it's a great way to sharpen and bring out detail, but it has to be used properly with the right mode and mask.

So here's the technique I used to get the shot above: I first duplicated the background and set the new layer to "screen", lowered opacity to around 20% and then applied a black mask. I then used a brush over my eyes to reveal the layer under the mask, thereby lightening the eyes just enough to make them stand out a bit. Next I created a new layer, held the "alt" key and clicked Layer-->Merge Visible. This merges everything so far into a new layer. Then I went to Filter-->Other-->High Pass, set it around 9.5 and clicked OK. This makes the whole pic look gray and weird. But if you go to your layer menu and change the mode to "Color" it makes the whole shot Black & White. I then lowered opacity until the background was desaturated enough to my liking, then applied another black mask, which makes the whole shot color again. Using a soft edged brush, I then painted over the background to make it desaturated, while leaving myself in full color. Finally, I created another new layer and merged visible elements again, then applied another high-pass filter, this time at about 15. Click OK and then change layer mode to Hard Light, lower opacity to about 50%, apply black mask and then paint over eyes, goatee, shirt and the fence that is in focus. Flatten image and then DONE.

Sounds like a lot of work, and it was when i first learned it, but now it takes me like 7-8 minutes. I love the effect!

What I did:

slightly sped up video for you to see exactly what I'm talking about...
youtu.be/551DC5mdd3k?hd=1

copied the background layer,
transformed it so that the length and width would be 50%
Cntrl J to duplicate the reseult and Ctrl T to transform... if you right click you can flip vertical or horizontal... I kept at it until I had the background image (see in the video)

Copied the four pictures and used the Ctrl E command to flatten them
then I used the Twirl filter set at 77 degrees...

on a new layer I used the filter>render>clouds filter this gave me some clouds based on the colors I had open in my "swatches"
I added the same twirl filter (Filter>distort>Twirl)
Then added a mask to make it only visible on the outer edges of the image. I didn't like the color of it so I used the Ctrl U command to change the color - used a bluish tint by clicking on the colorize button (to me that just seems the simplest way of doing it)

Added a vignette by using the lasso and making a rough selection of the edges then using Ctrl R to add feathering. When the selection was done I used an adjustment layer to make it darker... Didn't like how dark the actual hands became so I painted black with a large soft brush on the mask for it...

To finish I added some contrast with an adjustments curve layer...

And that's about it...

Daily App Experiment #93: "Scarving Artist" - Today's appsperiment was created to promote my friend Meredith's (aka @mermalady) "Scarf-A-Day" art show in SF, where she will be showing the 31 scarves she created throughout January. This photo was taken during one our many iPhone photo shoots we did around that time. The image was altered using various apps like #decim8 #camera+ #glitchbeam #toonpaint etc. Then I used #Juxtaposer to overlay Mer-Mer back on top of the glitched out picture. Mer is a having a reception tonight at Mission Comics And Art at 7pm.

This one is almost completely hidden in the group photo; you can just see the very tip of it.
And either I forgot to scan it, or the scans on the other computer, cos it's not on my shiny new one.
It's a bought pyramidal card blank, with sequins and flat-backed gems stuck on.

This embarrassing photo was the Christmas card for 1954 (or 1953, my mother isn't certain). I had this hobby horse until last year when we sold it at a garage sale when we prepared to sell my mother's house.

This tiny bloom as a photograph may not be appreciated unless seen in the large or original size view. The macro shot captured tiny details I could not see. This three petal bloom of the "Wandering Jew" plant is about 3/8" across. The remainder of another bloom's growth is seen to the left of this fresh bloom. Another view of this plant is in my stream here, in a much more typical view. From January, this link shows the dark plant mixed with oxalis, near my front door. With the heat continuing months' of no relief, the plant is much lighter in color and strains to catch moisture.

Leaving Zion National Park for Bryce Canyon along the Utah 9th road, you see these majestuous colored cliffs on the horizon (see map).

That day, they were under dark clouds and some rain.
But then a lull let the light comes on them, delivering this fascinating landscape.

Lighting, contrast and saturation have been adapted.

The Making of Harry Potter 29-05-2012

My first word when I entered Diagon Alley was “WOW”.
This was definitely the highlight of the tour.
I apologise for uploading so many from this part of the tour. The lighting kept changing and I lost count the number of times I just walked up and down (with my mouth probably wide open)!
These photos don't really do it justice. It has to be seen to be believed. I can't wait to go back.

Welcome to Diagon Alley
The Diagon Alley set has never been the same twice. Since its construction for Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone walls have shifted, shopfronts have moved and entire buildings have come and gone. In fact, many of these set pieces were redressed and repurposed as Hogsmeade village for Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban.
Years later Stuart Craig and his artists went back to the original drawings and redesigned all of Diagon Alley for Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. Each building's architecture was carefully tweaked and refined to create the picture-perfect street as it is now.

People the world-over have been enchanted by the Harry Potter films for nearly a decade. The wonderful special effects and amazing creatures have made this iconic series beloved to both young and old - and now, for the first time, the doors are going to be opened for everyone at the studio where it first began. You'll have the chance to go behind-the-scenes and see many things the camera never showed. From breathtakingly detailed sets to stunning costumes, props and animatronics, Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides a unique showcase of the extraordinary British artistry, technology and talent that went into making the most successful film series of all time. Secrets will be revealed.

Warner Bros. Studio Tour London provides an amazing new opportunity to explore the magic of the Harry Potter films - the most successful film series of all time. This unique walking tour takes you behind-the-scenes and showcases a huge array of beautiful sets, costumes and props. It also reveals some closely guarded secrets, including facts about the special effects and animatronics that made these films so hugely popular all over the world.

Here are just some of the things you can expect to see and do:
- Step inside and discover the actual Great Hall.
- Explore Dumbledore’s office and discover never-before-seen treasures.
- Step onto the famous cobbles of Diagon Alley, featuring the shop fronts of Ollivanders wand shop, Flourish and Blotts, the Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes, Gringotts Wizarding Bank and Eeylops Owl Emporium.
- See iconic props from the films, including Harry’s Nimbus 2000 and Hagrid’s motorcycle.
- Learn how creatures were brought to life with green screen effects, animatronics and life-sized models.
- Rediscover other memorable sets from the film series, including the Gryffindor common room, the boys’ dormitory, Hagrid’s hut, Potion’s classroom and Professor Umbridge’s office at the Ministry of Magic.

Located just 20 miles from the heart of London at Warner Bros. Studios Leavesden, the very place where it all began and where all eight of the Harry Potter films were brought to life. The Studio Tour is accessible to everyone and promises to be a truly memorable experience - whether you’re an avid Harry Potter fan, an all-round movie buff or you just want to try something that’s a little bit different.

The tour is estimated to take approximately three hours (I was in there for 5 hours!), however, as the tour is mostly self guided, you are free to explore the attraction at your own pace. During this time you will be able to see many of the best-loved sets and exhibits from the films. Unique and precious items from the films will also be on display, alongside some exciting hands-on interactive exhibits that will make you feel like you’re actually there.

The magic also continues in the Gift Shop, which is full of exciting souvenirs and official merchandise, designed to create an everlasting memory of your day at Warner Bros. Studio Tour London.

Hogwarts Castle Model - Get a 360 degree view of the incredible, hand sculpted 1:24 scale construction that features within the Studio Tour. The Hogwarts castle model is the jewel of the Art Department having been built for the first film, Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone. It took 86 artists and crew members to construct the first version which was then rebuilt and altered many times over for the next seven films. The work was so extensive that if one was to add all the man hours that have gone into building and reworking the model, it would come to over 74 years. The model was used for aerial photography, and was digitally scanned for CGI scenes.

The model, which sits at nearly 50 feet in diameter, has over 2,500 fibre optic lights that simulate lanterns and torches and even gave the illusion of students passing through hallways in the films. To show off the lighting to full effect a day-to-night cycle will take place every four minutes so you can experience its full beauty.

An amazing amount of detail went into the making of the model: all the doors are hinged, real plants are used for landscaping and miniature birds are housed in the Owlery. To make the model appear even more realistic, artists rebuilt miniature versions of the courtyards from Alnwick Castle and Durham Cathedral, where scenes from Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone were shot.
