Testing the Promote
photo blog
I have the Promote remote for some time now and I have been testing it quite a lot. And i decided to try it on one of my favorite views in Bratislava, the view of the New Bridge. I did 7 shots here. I could use even more, as still there are few overexposed areas. But still, I'm very impressed with the amount of detail you can get when using more than 3 shots.

I think I'm starting to be too critical of myself. I finished this photo already had it uploaded, when I notices a whiter area around the bridge. Probably because I added a little glow. First I tried to edit it out, but could not get the result I wanted, so I started once more. And with the second try, I'm satisfied :)

Also I'm very happy that I started to use a bubble level on my camera. I have the horizon nice and leveled, even if there are distortion in my photo. It really make it easier.

Fatullayev spent nearly four years in prison on charges of defamation, terrorism, incitement of ethnic hatred, tax evasion and drug possession. The first civilized American? Interesting way of describing him!

And if anyone has the patience to do the triangles puzzle, I'd kinda like to know the answer.

"The First Civlized American! Franklin. Inventor of The United States was the last son of a last son of a last son of a last son. He was a scientist, philosopher, mathematician, economist, advertiser, promoter, prohibitionist [booo!], organizer, humorist, satirist, editor, musician, astronomer, meteorologist, postmaster, fireman, legislator, diplomat, columnist, propgandist, salesman, publisher, politician, lobbyist, moralist, publicist, soldier, athlete, architest, quartermaster, librarian, free thinker
AND HE INVENTED
The rocking chair, harmonica, street lamp, lightning conductor, double spectacles, Franklin stove, circulating library, modern militia, white duck clothing, daylights savings tim.
He discovered the identity of lightning and electricity, the gulf stream, broom corn, the first system of ventilation, aurora borealis, vitamins in the usn's ray, balanced diet, marsh gas, breathing through the skin, benefits of fresh air.
And he invented the system and term United States Of America."

Other captions from this picture:

"A mule was elected committeeman from Milton, Wash, by a margin of 31 votes."

A perfect 36(?) orange. Weight 2.5 lbs."

"Once a blue moon appeared in Australia. It was caused by a tremendous dust storm containing myriads of specks of silica oxide which cut out the red and yellow rays -- leaving only the blue."

"Do fish sleep? Although they cannot close their eyes -- fish at certain times have periods of inactivity which is comparable to sleep."

BACKSTORY: Ripley's Believe It Or Not! museums kick ass! Definitely worth the ~ admission. We spent several hours looking at things and photographing. And no two museums are alike -- I've been to at least 2, possibly 3. Sure, they may have some of the same wall prints and statues, but the actual items are often one-of-a-kind. Find the museum nearest to you with their official museum locator app.

Also, note that I did not repost every one of Vicky & Ryan's pictures. You might want to click through and check out some of their other pictures from the museum as well!

Tinth Anniversary Card

Last week was the tenth wedding anniversary of Dave and Jo. I discovered that the material often associated with the 10th anniversary is tin. So I searched for suitable images to create this with.

These images (from other flickr users) - all have creative commons licenses that allow manipulation - and came up when I did an advanced search for such licensed images with tin in their descriptions, headers or tags.

My thanks go to:

KB35 for "Tin Man"
Hamed Saber for "Engraving (Qalam-Zani) Vase"
LinBow for "GREEN TIN HOLES"
z e n for "squared circle wood plug"

This last I used as an overlay so is not very visible but added the coloured streaks.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Rosengarten (Italian: Catinaccio; German: Rosengarten) is a massif in the Dolomites of northern Italy. It is located between the Tiers, Eggental and Fassa Valleys, in Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol.
One peculiarity of the Rosengarten is the pink shade which, due to the presence of dolomite mineral, it takes in the sunset, celebrated in the Südtirollied as "glowing". Meaning "Rose garden" in German, the name refers to the legend of King Laurin and his Rose Garden, a traditional story explaining the outer appearance of the mountain range.

SUNSPOT ALERT: The most active sunspot of the year so far is emerging in the sun's southern hemisphere: movie. Sunspot 1024 has at least a dozen individual dark cores and it is crackling with B-class solar flares. This morning, amateur astronomer David Tyler caught one of the flares in action from his backyard solar observatory in England: The magnetic polarity of sunspot 1024 identifies it as a member of new Solar Cycle 24. Its rapid emergence on July 3rd and 4th continues the recent (few-month) trend of intensifying new-cycle activity. This sunspot is the best offering yet from the young solar cycle. Monitoring is encouraged. spaceweather.com/

A very clever comment on the cropcircle phenomena by a brilliant scientist:
Albert Einstein once remarked that for the human there is no more powerful feeling than that of the 'mysterious.' In fact, he was convinced this feeling for the mysterious was the cradle for all works of science, art, and religion. In light of Einstein's conviction, one might ask: "What is the opposite of a feeling for the mysterious?" The opposite would be the sense that one understands it all. The opposite would be the feeling that one is in possession of a system that explains all the phenomena in the universe. For such a person, the universe loses its appeal for it becomes something we don't really need to pay attention to. The universe becomes an exemplification of a theory that one has already understood. No real surprises are possible, only the working out of a logical system through time. When a feeling for the mysterious is lost, one become s vulnerable to the various fundamentalisms plaguing our planet, each one with its passionate certainty that it has all the answers while every other system is just superstition.

In moments of stress and breakdown, there is a powerful drive in us to acquire answers and explanations. Certainly in our own time when we are dismantling ecosystems around the planet and deconstructing the stable climate upon which our civilization is based, we feel a deep need to know what is real and what is good and how to proceed. This need can become so great we are liable to latch onto one of these simplistic pseudo-explanations just to quell the feelings of fear and doom surfacing in us. "What on Earth?" does not provide any such simplistic explanations. This restraint is one of its greatest achievements. By insisting that the Crop Circles are beyond any easy explanation, "What on Earth?" enables us to make peace with living in the ambiguity of not knowing. This ability to live with ambiguity is related to a sense for the mysterious and together these two may be the most important factors for deep creativity to take place. At the very least, we need to realize that an embrace of ambiguity is a form of humility when confronted by the magnificent complexity of nature.

One of the great benefits of viewing "What on Earth?" is the feeling one can get of wading into the mysterious. Through its balanced and wide-open approach to the phenomena of Crop Circles, the film has the power to ease us out of some of the prior certainties we might have had. "What on Earth?" explores and celebrates the fact of the existence of these designs. And as we are guided into this reflection, we find ourselves considering new ideas about the nature of our universe. We begin to imagine that things might be different than we thought. We might even begin to release ourselves from some of the tired explanations lodged into our minds by the media. But most important of all, as we view the film we might even begin to feel stunned by the simple fact that here we are in the midst of this overwhelming mystery, the universe."
-- Brian Swimme, mathematical cosmologist specializing in the evolution of the universe

Origami (折り紙) means a folding paper in Japanese. And a pod is an 5x3 index card holder that plays a keyrole in the PoIC system. Let's make it by ourselves :)

Print the template on 3 sheets of A4 size paper. A paper should not be too thin or too thick. Find appropriate paper that bears open-close action of the accordion.

# I found a paper I use here was still thin. Choose thicker paper like this when you try. ;)
